These ‘Near Net Shape’ pistons – no, I’d never heard of them before, either – differ from your regular pistons, which are machined to give valve clearances and other 3D features, but accommodating all such things in their forged crown, and knowing how forged materials derive their strength from the forging process itself, that suggests that it is a good thing.
We are told that they are difficult to design, which has always been a cost factor, but lower production costs make up for that and they are ultimately less expensive than regular forged pistons. Reassurance of quality comes from the Wiseco name, and these come complete with rings, wrist pins and circlips.
