Less Flat Track, more green lane, the new FTR1200 Rally will have those who spat their dummy out at Indian’s audacity of ‘copying the Ducati Scrambler’ choking on their coffee and reaching for the green pen, but will have many more reaching for their chequebook.
If you recognise the name, think back to AmV93 and the announcement that Indian had released four series of mix and match accessories for the FTR, one of which was the Rally, which built on the base model’s impressive off-road credentials.
While it stops short of the revised tailpiece in place of the ubiquitous weird hugger affair that has blighted bikes of all nations for the last couple of years – I’m guessing because that makes homologation easier – it does have the laced wheels and proper off-road tyres that transform the style of the bike, taller pro-taper handlebars and a saddle that looks more comfortable for a pillion. And they’ve been a lot more confident on the quasi-tank’s graphics than with the accessory pack, leaving no doubt whatsoever as to the brand.
No news regarding whether it’s available as an S as yet: all images are of the round analogue instrument rather than the Ride Command, but that is always an option for the future … as is a full adventure tour model, if they can work out how to increase the size of the fuel tank.
Indian FTR1200 Rally
Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company, today announced the introduction of the 2020 FTR Rally. The 2020 FTR Rally builds on the 2019 FTR design framework but adds authentic retro styling to the modern performance capabilities riders expect.
Sure to turn heads at every light and every intersection, the FTR Rally features Titanium Smoke paint with the Indian Motorcycle headdress logo, aluminium wire wheels with red pinstripe, brown aviator seat, a new rally windscreen and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires.
“The FTR Rally is a statement maker. Whether commuting to work, meeting up with friends for coffee, or just ripping around town, the FTR Rally will turn heads wherever it goes,” said Reid Wilson, Vice President of Indian Motorcycle. “But more than just eye candy, the bike reciprocates that ‘cool feeling’ through its 123-horsepower engine, commanding riding position and nimble handling, perfect for city streets or back, canyon roads.”
The FTR Rally combines responsive handling with upright ergonomics to create a commanding riding experience suitable for urban environments or backroad adventures. It’s equipped with cruise control, a USB fast charge port, and new ProTaper handlebars that are 50mm higher for better comfort and handling. The FTR Rally also features an LED headlight and LED turn signals offering better visibility with minimal maintenance.
The 1203cc V-twin engine features a smooth power delivery with loads of low-end punch. The engine produces 93 kW, 120 Nm of torque and features a flat torque curve to deliver a fun riding experience in all conditions. The engine is housed in a black trellis frame and the FTR Rally will continue to feature an inverted front suspension with radially mounted dual Brembo brakes for exceptional control and stopping power.
The 2020 FTR Rally is compatible with the entire range of 40+ accessories specifically developed for the FTR platform, giving riders the ability to customise combinations and maintain the independence they seek when purchasing an Indian Motorcycle.
The FTR Rally will be available at Indian Motorcycle dealerships early 2020.
