Imagine a pair of trousers, as resistant to tearing as steel, that could protect your delicate skin from the abrasion of the road in the event of accident, and then imagine that they were as comfortable as a pair of jeans, looked like jeans and in fact were a pair of jeans.
Yes, we’ve all seen them: denim jeans with an aramid lining – branded or otherwise – in a range of styles that either draw attention to its inclusion or do everything to disguise it. They are coming thick and fast now, and in as many styles and colours as regular jeans, but these are different.
These are, to all intents and purposes, a pair of jeans.
Turn them inside-out and other than two pairs of empty pockets that can take Rokker’s preferred 3D0 armour, you won’t be able to tell them apart from regular denim.
So where’s the lining?
In every thread.
Literally.
Every thread of cotton is formed round a core of the latest candidate for the title ‘World’s Strongest Fibre’, the poetically named Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthelene – or UHMWPE to its friends.
Developed for space and military applications, it is said to have an unparalleled resistance to wear, but it is a fibre and as such can be incorporated into fabrics in all sorts of imaginative ways.
And that is exactly what Rokker have done.
Most denim uses two vertical ‘Warp’ cotton threads, dyed to give the material its colour, and a horizontal ‘Weft’ thread which is left raw – which is why jeans are a lighter colour when turned inside-out – and Rokker take this a step further. In the ROKKERTECH denim, the more structural warps are wrapped round UHMWPE while the weft contains an element of Dual FX Lycra within the core to give it a welcome element of elasticity where you need it.
They look and feel like a regular 14oz denim, are tailored in the timeless 5-pocket style, and nobody would ever know but you, your credit card company and any witnesses to you sliding down the road on your backside, expecting an unpleasant mess when you stood up.
Indeed, they feel like a very good modern denim, offering unrestricted movement – even in a Slim fit – and they have the best zip in the world: buttons.
I’ve never actually been a big fan of a button fly, myself, but with a smaller button used for the opening than the main fastening – and all Rokker-branded, of course – I’m converted.
As such, I’m tempted to wear them all day, every day – well, except when grubbing around in the workshop with oily hands – because they certainly have that all-day comfort that jeans are renowned for. But I’m currently saving them for when I need to make a good impression and for photo shoots … although I am desperate to find out what happens when the cotton starts to degrade, as it eventually must.
I can only presume that the UHMWPE will become visible, but they certainly won’t be going through at the knees.
They’re not cheap, but there’s nothing else like them at the moment. And you do get the assurance of the highest quality and the bonus of a free Rocker T-shirt in the cotton drawstring bag that they are shipped in … which, incidentally, makes a great helmet bag … for a small helmet.
