Harley-Davidson is justifiably renowned for getting the maximum benefit out of their branding, but they can also do things more subtly and this anniversary jacket in a dull heavyweight buffalo leather – trimmed with contrasting distressed cowhide stripes on the arms, subtle anniversary badges and appliqué graphics on the back – is a case in point.
Used to demonstrate how The Motor Company have embraced the new CE regulation at the Ride Ride Slide event in Croatia, it is far from the first jacket they have produced that complies with CE.
They adopted it last year for all clothing and making sure that all dealers were compliant as of April this year.
It is also far from being the first leather jacket they have made: they started in 1947 with a classic black leather jacket, updating that in 1952 and giving it a name – the Cycle Champ – in a shorter style for the princely sum of $32.50, with the ladies being a few bucks less at $25.95.
Fully embracing the new CE principles, the leather itself has passed independent testing for abrasion resistance, impact testing and seam bursting,
as well as being fitted with CE approved armour at the elbows and shoulders and pocketed for a back protector.
A thin removable full liner makes this a proper extended three season jacket, and has the interesting feature of replicating the pockets in the outer shell exactly, which made me transfer between them almost automatically, the only additional one being the ubiquitous wallet pocket in the jacket itself, and always available.
For fit, adjustable straps at the waist on branded studs keeps the jacket tight to your body, unless your stomach is already doing that, and an unusual feature at the cuffs is that the three-way adjustment is independent of the zip, so once it is adjusted you can leave it set.
As mentioned, the branding is subtle, not least because the accent colour is Anniversary Blue which doesn’t stand out as much as their regular orange, and it is particularly interesting to note that while CE regs are turning motorcycle clothing into PPE, this follows the current trend of having no retro-reflective elements.
The only other visible Anniversary references are on the upper arm on the right-hand side, and a strip across the comfort liner of the main jacket body.
A good looking jacket that feels good and robust, and allows you to wear the brand without feeling too much like a clothes horse.
