It\u2019s not just letting your hair down after a week\u2019s work but the realisation that unless you\u2019re going on the rideout,\u00a0you haven\u2019t got to go anywhere on the Saturday \u2026\u00a0well, except to walk to the bar for a social.<\/p>\n

Of course we all think that we know how much we\u00a0can consume before packing up to leave on Sunday, but\u00a0in truth only those who have been breathalysed on their\u00a0home really know for sure.<\/p>\n

A breathalyser measures the amount of alcohol in\u00a0your system \u2013 your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)\u00a0\u2013 by the amount that evaporates from the blood passing\u00a0through your lungs. Which is why strong mints don\u2019t\u00a0work.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Assuming a healthy liver, your body can process\u00a0about one unit of alcohol in your bloodstream per\u00a0hour \u2013 after taking between 20 and 90 minutes to get into your bloodstream from your stomach and small\u00a0intestine \u2013 unless you\u2019ve really gone for it, in which case\u00a0it can struggle to keep up.<\/p>\n

You might be surprised to learn that while we eat in\u00a0the expectation that it will soak up the alcohol, it\u2019s not\u00a0always a good thing. Yes, food does soak up alcohol,\u00a0but it also slows down the rate at which alcohol will get\u00a0into the bloodstream. Great for meals out, but you\u2019re\u00a0only borrowing time: it will still get you and will add up over the course of the night. It is just one of the\u00a0reasons why you get more drunk after you\u2019re finished drinking … and perhaps why there are so many fights in kebab shops.<\/p>\n

And where does all this leave you?<\/p>\n

With a headache on Sunday morning, wondering\u00a0whether you have still got a healthy liver \u2026 and whether\u00a0it has done its job properly.<\/p>\n
