\"\"<\/a>We’ve all been there: a bike park on a hot day, carrying a helmet, even\u00a0if you’re wearing\u00a0even a mesh jacket, and wishing\u00a0you\u2019d gone in the car after all and were walking round in\u00a0shorts and a t-shirt.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How cool would it be if we lived in a world where you\u00a0could hang a couple of hundred quid worth of jacket and a\u00a0helmet on the handlebars and walk away, confident that it\u00a0would still be there when you came back.<\/p>\n

With technology, you can.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve known Deemeed for a long time now \u2013 I\u2019ve been\u00a0using a custom version of their excellent Discovery bag\u00a0for years now \u2013 so when Thomasz showed me the Double\u00a0Helmet Bag, which was selling like hotcakes from their stall at\u00a0Prague, I was all ears.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an obvious solution to an age-old problem, and while you\u00a0might wonder how you\u2019re going to fit an XL leather jacket\u00a0with armour inside, never mind with a helmet \u2013 which is\u00a0the alternative use of a bag intended to hold two helmets, and I would suggest the most likely\u00a0\u2013 I\u2019ve tried with four different jackets so far and each is\u00a0swallowed whole, leaving more than enough space for a full\u00a0face lid.<\/p>\n

And it’s much more than just a waterproof sack that you can hang off\u00a0your handlebars: this is a lockable at the opening, having\u00a0drawn it closed using a steel rope that passes through\u00a0the visible ends of a lighter steel rope that defines a mesh\u00a0within the bag itself \u2013 a small enough grid to prevent large\u00a0items being removed through it \u2013 before that rope\u00a0goes on to lock the bag to the bike. Out of sight, out\u00a0of mind and with a very visible restraint.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>It can be a\u00a0very audible restraint, too, if you opt for an Alarmed\u00a0Lock in a hammer finish paint or chrome.<\/p>\n

Mindful of the way that it will hang, you put your\u00a0jacket in first \u2013 noticing that it\u00a0is lined with a soft fabric that was specifically designed to protect delicate finishes \u2013 then with your gloves and any smaller items\u00a0in your helmet, or stowed in the original carrying\u00a0back, you put your helmet in second, open side first, and once you\u2019ve drawn\u00a0the neck closed all you can see is a small patch of\u00a0helmet.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Then you hang it upside-down off the handlebar, or any\u00a0other convenient point \u2013 closure\u00a0at the bottom, so that it can\u2019t fill with water if it should rain\u00a0\u2013 lock it to the bike, and walk\u00a0away, free of all the crap that you otherwise end up carrying around with you!<\/p>\n

There are some obvious caveats:\u00a0nothing is completely invulnerable\u00a0to a determined thief, so make sure it\u00a0is full visible to the rest of the world,\u00a0and don\u2019t think of it as an overnight\u00a0solution … except perhaps at bike\u00a0rallies where it will be infinitely more\u00a0secure than your tent.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>It is intended more as a robust\u00a0deterrent than a safe, but as deterrents\u00a0go, it has a lot going for it \u2026 which is\u00a0why Thomasz was last seen rushing\u00a0through the trading area when last\u00a0seen, going to meet a colleague who\u00a0had returned with fresh stocks.<\/p>\n

It is as easily stowed on a Scout Bobber as the Ultra Limited, and it proved its worth even on a full dresser. In fact, I’d say that’s perhaps the optimum use for it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>How come?<\/p>\n

Because while a Tourpak will famously hold two full-face helmets, it needs to be empty in the first place. When you’re touring it will be full, and you \u00a0will be probably wearing full riding gear to cope with a broad range of conditions.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the simplest ideas are\u00a0the best.<\/p>\n
