\"\"<\/a>Many years ago, when god\u2019s dog was a puppy and I was\u00a0taking my first steps on two wheels, all I wanted was a\u00a0leather jacket \u2013 preferably a lancer \u2013 to go with it: the two\u00a0timeless symbols of teenage rebellion at the time. And that\u2019s\u00a0perhaps why I ended up with Barbour\u2019s nearest equivalent\u00a0of the Belstaff Trailmaster jacket.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a practical birthday present off my dad and I\u00a0really should have been grateful, but I was seventeen and it\u00a0wasn\u2019t a leather jacket.<\/p>\n

I begrudgingly wore\u00a0it in all weathers and it\u00a0dutifully kept me dry if not\u00a0necessarily very warm, but\u00a0I still didn\u2019t appreciate it\u00a0and can\u2019t remember what\u00a0eventually happened to it\u00a0after I got my first decent\u00a0leather jacket: I\u2019m guessing\u00a0that mould got it in a damp\u00a0garage.<\/p>\n

And I never looked back,\u00a0until Wheels and Waves,when I was offered a Roland\u00a0Sands Design Truman jacket\u00a0to test, and figured it was\u00a0perhaps time to give waxed\u00a0cotton another chance.<\/p>\n

In the decades between,\u00a0waxed cotton has changed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>No longer does it mark\u00a0the Draylon furniture of\u00a0your local hostelry, need\u00a0reproofing, or necessarily look like you\u2019ve just ridden a dirt\u00a0bike out of a muddy hole.<\/p>\n

The first thing that strikes you is that it is light: as light as\u00a0a casual jacket \u2013 lighter than a ladies leather jacket!<\/p>\n

The second is that it has been nicely designed, but then it\u00a0is RSD and Roland Sands has got a name to live up to.<\/p>\n

As such, it has his trademark down-for-closed zippers,\u00a0the key-clasp in the right hand pocket and credit card\u00a0pocket on the right sleeve.<\/p>\n

I judge a jacket partly by its pockets because it\u2019s a\u00a0major part of the function \u2013 and because I will spend an\u00a0inordinate amount of time searching through them at some\u00a0point or other, especially if they are poorly placed \u2013 and the\u00a0Truman doesn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n

Externally, it has a patch pocket sealed by a studded flap\u00a0on the right breast \u2013 big enough to take my indestructible\u00a0phone, so it should take an iPhone Plus or Galaxy Note \u2013\u00a0and a smaller side access pocket on the left, plus a pair of\u00a0handwarmer pockets at the waist. Inside, there is an easy\u00a0accessed wallet pocket just inside the zipper, a bigger flat\u00a0pocket in the right hand lining and a pair of hammock\u00a0pockets at the waist, which are a perfect size to carry a pair\u00a0of short gloves: one each side.<\/p>\n

I\"\"<\/a>t is bomber jacket short, pulled in at the waist using\u00a0buckled straps, and in its black colour scheme the leather\u00a0patches at the elbows and shoulder are all-but invisible\u00a0against the black waxed cotton, but in this, the Ranger, they\u00a0make a statement.<\/p>\n

And while it\u2019s light, it is surprisingly warm \u2013 certainly\u00a0warm enough for Cannes in late Autumn, and even 7,500\u00a0feet up a volcano in Tenerife in January \u2013 I know, your\u00a0heart bleeds \u2013 but also for October in Crewe, riding the\u00a0new Street Bob home in the pissing rain!<\/p>\n

And yes, it is waterproof: the studded pocket is only\u00a0open to remove the phone so Amanda could take a picture.<\/p>\n

And no, not looking quite so smug now!<\/p>\n

Still it was a good test.<\/p>\n

There was a slight leak round the zippered vents in the\u00a0sleeves, but for\u00a0what feels like a\u00a0casual summer\u00a0jacket, I was\u00a0gobsmacked.<\/p>\n

Gobsmacked,\u00a0too, when I put\u00a0it on\u00a0less\u00a0than an hour\u00a0later, without\u00a0thinking, to nip to\u00a0the shop.<\/p>\n

It was dry, and\u00a0looking none\u00a0the worse for the\u00a0experience!<\/p>\n

No, I couldn\u2019t\u00a0have done that in\u00a0a leather jacket,\u00a0eh dad?<\/p>\n

I\"\"<\/a>\u2019ve barely had it off my back since: as much because I\u00a0am trying to find something that it isn\u2019t good at.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m still looking.<\/p>\n

It helps that I like the style.<\/p>\n

It certainly helps that the material is dry to the touch,\u00a0beautifully lined and there\u2019s nothing clammy about it \u2013\u00a0which is my underlying memory of waxed cotton of old\u00a0\u2013 and that even though it has been designed expressly as a\u00a0motorcycle jacket, and even has many obvious styling cues,\u00a0you can wear it anywhere.<\/p>\n

Granted, much of that will be true of a lot of modern\u00a0waxed cotton, but the cut and style of the Truman adds a\u00a0certain something.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m delighted that there is an alternative functional\u00a0fabric to rival whatever Cordura is called this year, because\u00a0no fancy fabrics have impressed me more, or quicker, than\u00a0this new waxed cotton.<\/p>\n

It just goes to show that you should always listen to your\u00a0father! Sorry dad.<\/p>\n
