80-inch S&S Shovel-Style Engines

An engine that needs no introduction round here, I’m sure, being the last of Harley-Davidson’s sculpted hemis. Successive generations might well be more efficient, but there’s something about these older motors even when they’re brand new and manufactured to modern tolerances, and the bigger debate is generator versus cone.

In this case, the right answer is ‘cone’.

These 4¼x3½ 80-inch motors arrive fully assembled, using the best components that S&S have to offer – steel flywheels, billet oil pump, roller rockerarms, reinforced rods – that exceed the original factory specs, and while the hard-edged billet rockerboxes and gear cover set it apart from a classic motor, they offer improved material quality and finer tolerances compared to the original cast parts. In the case of the top end, oiling is provided though the pushrods, making external oil lines unnecessary.

Not promoted as a performance engine, the SH80 engine comes fitted with S&S’ H-grind cam – a straight copy of the stock Harley cam – but it does not include an intake manifold, carburettor or ignition module, leaving you free to choose your own.

The crankcases and cylinder heads have a cast finish, the cast iron barrels are black powder-coated and the gear cover and rocker boxes are polished.
